@article{fdi:010053157, title = {{N}ew insights into the mycorrhizal status of {C}yperaceae from ultramafic soils in {N}ew {C}aledonia}, author = {{L}agrange, {A}lexandre and {D}ucousso, {M}. and {J}ourand, {P}hilippe and {M}ajorel, {C}larisse and {A}mir, {H}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{I}n {N}ew {C}aledonia, a hot spot of biodiversity, plants from the {C}yperaceae family are mostly endemic and considered pioneers of the nickel-rich natural serpentine ecosystem. {T}he aim of the study was to highlight the mycorrhizal status of these {C}yperaceae and to bring new insights into the role of this symbiosis in plant tolerance to ultramafic soils. {N}ine {C}yperaceae species were studied and presented evidence of root colonization by arbuscular mycorrhizas ({AM}s), with frequencies ranging from 8% to 57%. {T}he highest level of {AM} colonization was observed in plants from the endemic dominant genus {C}ostularia. {M}olecular evidence demonstrated the presence of {G}lomus sp. inside the roots. {I}n a controlled greenhouse assay, {AM} inoculation of {C}ostularia comosa grown under ultramafic conditions significantly enhanced plant growth, with an increase in biomass by up to 2.4-fold for shoots and 1.2-fold for roots, and also reduced nickel content in roots by 2.5-fold, as compared with the controls. {A}ll these data support our hypotheses (i) that a relationship exists between the mycorrhizal status of {C}yperaceae and their habitat, and (ii) that {AM} have a positive role in plant tolerance to ultramafic soils (mineral nutrition and metal tolerance), suggesting the use of these pioneer plants with {AM} management as potential tools for nickel mine site rehabilitation in {N}ew {C}aledonia.}, keywords = {arbuscular mycorrhiza ; {C}yperaceae ; ultramafic soil ; {N}ew {C}aledonia}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{C}anadian {J}ournal of {M}icrobiology}, volume = {57}, numero = {1}, pages = {21--28}, ISSN = {0008-4166}, year = {2011}, DOI = {10.1139/w10-096}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010053157}, }
