@article{fdi:010053072, title = {{C}ontrasted evolution of glacial lakes along the {H}indu {K}ush {H}imalaya mountain range between 1990 and 2009}, author = {{G}ardelle, {J}. and {A}rnaud, {Y}ves and {B}erthier, {E}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{I}n this study, we present a first regional assessment of glacial lake distribution and evolution in the {H}indu {K}ush {H}imalaya ({HKH}). {S}even sites have been selected between {B}hutan and {A}fghanistan, to capture the climatic variability along the 2000-km long mountain range. {F}or each site, glacial lakes have been mapped with {LANDSAT} satellite imagery acquired in 1990, 2000 and 2009, using an automatic classification. {I}n the {E}ast ({I}ndia, {N}epal and {B}hutan), glacial lakes are bigger and more numerous than in the {W}est ({P}akistan, {A}fghanistan), and have grown continuously between 1990 and 2009 by 20% to 65%. {O}n the other hand, during the same period, the glacial lake coverage has shrunk in the {H}indu {K}ush (-50%) and the {K}arakorum (-30%). {T}his east/west pattern of lake changes seems in agreement with sparse glaciological measurements that suggest less (or even no) ice loss in the western part of the {HKH}.}, keywords = {{G}lacial lakes ; {H}imalaya ; {R}emote sensing}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{G}lobal and {P}lanetary {C}hange}, volume = {75}, numero = {1-2}, pages = {47--55}, ISSN = {0921-8181}, year = {2011}, DOI = {10.1016/j.gloplacha.2010.10.003}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010053072}, }
