@article{fdi:010049596, title = {{T}axonomic revision of {S}argassum sect. {A}canthocarpicae ({F}ucales, {P}haeophyceae)}, author = {{M}attio, {L}ydiane and {P}ayri, {C}laude and {V}erlaque, {M}. and de {R}eviers, {B}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{S}argassum is one of the morphologically most complex phaeophyceaen genera, and is divided into subgenera, sections, subsections, series and species groups based on highly polymorphic characters. {R}ecent {DNA} analyses have highlighted incongruities in the traditional classification of the genus and especially within {S}argassum subg. {S}argassum sect. {A}canthocalpicae. {O}ur goal was to re-assess the relationships among taxa currently attributed to this section in the {P}acific basin. {W}e undertook the taxonomic study in two main steps: ({I}) the morphological examination of large collections from inter-tropical {P}acific islands and type specimens from worldwide localities; and (2) {DNA} analyses using a set of three markers ({ITS}-2, partial rbc{LS}-operon, cox3). {M}orphological and {DNA} analyses confirmed that {S}. sect. {A}canthocarpicae is based on unsuitable morphological characters and is not monophyletic. {O}n the basis of this study, we propose (1) abandoning subsections within {S}. sect. {A}canthocarpicae; (2) synonymization of {S}. sect. {A}canthocarpicae and sect. {M}alacocarpicae with sect. {S}argassum; and (3) the elevation of {S}. ser. {I}licifoliae and ser. {B}inderianae to sectional rank as well as their re-description according to new sets of morphological characters.}, keywords = {{A}canthocarpicae ; {B}inderianae ; {I}licifoliae ; molecular phylogeny ; {P}acific ; taxonomic revision}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{T}axon}, volume = {59}, numero = {3}, pages = {896--904}, ISSN = {0040-0262}, year = {2010}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010049596}, }
