@article{fdi:010049516, title = {{S}creening of strains of {L}entinula edodes grown on model olive mill wastewater in solid and liquid state culture for polyphenol biodegradation}, author = {{L}akhtar, {H}. and {I}smaili-{A}laoui, {M}. and {P}hilippoussis, {A}. and {P}erraud {G}aime, {I}sabelle and {R}oussos, {S}evastianos}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{I}n {M}orocco, the olive industry produces great amounts of olive mill wastewater ({OMW}) yearly in a short period (250 000 m(3) of liquid wastes in four months, {N}ovember-{F}ebruary). {P}henolic compounds are largely responsible for the phytotoxicity and antimicrobial effects of {OMW}. {S}everal studies have been carried out on biological and enzymatic treatments of {OMW}. {H}owever, the use of {OMW} to produce value-added products, e.g. mushroom cultivation, are less explored. {T}his research aimed to select shiitake mushroom strains capable of growing on {OMW}, involving decolorization, removal of total phenol, and high production of mycelial biomass. {S}ixteen strains of {L}entinula edodes were evaluated for their tolerance to {OMW}, apical growth rate, and biomass production on agar media. {T}he highest biomass yields were recorded in four strains ({L}e118, {L}e119, {L}e121, {L}e122) grown in the presence of 20% (v/v) {OMW}. {T}he ability of these pre-selected strains to decolorize and to remove total phenol from {OMW} was then assessed in liquid culture, without nutritional supplements. {T}he strain {L}e119 of {L} edodes showed 65% decolorization, and 75% elimination of total phenol according to the {F}olin-{C}iocalteu assay. {L}accase production was the main lignolytic activity observed, and one of its isoforms stained on native {PAGE} with p-phenylenediamine as substrate at p{H} 5.0.}, keywords = {{L}entinula edodes ; {O}live mill wastewater ; {S}olid state culture ; {L}iquid ; state culture ; {F}ungal biomass ; {T}otal phenol ; {L}accase ; {D}etoxification}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{I}nternational {B}iodeterioration and {B}iodegradation}, volume = {64}, numero = {3}, pages = {167--172}, ISSN = {0964-8305}, year = {2010}, DOI = {10.1016/j.ibiod.2009.10.006}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010049516}, }
