  abstract = {{S}argassum {C}. {A}gardh (1820) is a taxonomically difficult genus distributed worldwide and reported as the most species-rich genus of the {F}ucales. {I}t is especially abundant in the {P}acific where decreasing species richness is reported to occur from west to east. {N}ew {C}aledonia has been recognized as one of the hotspots of {S}argassum diversity; however, species lists available for this region are old and incomplete and have not yet been updated with regard to the latest taxonomic revisions published. {T}his study aimed at revising {S}argassum diversity in {N}ew {C}aledonia and to assess its geographic affinities with neighboring {P}acific regions. {W}e used combined morphological and {DNA} analyses on new collections and examined numerous type specimens. {A}lthough 45 taxa have been listed in the literature, most of them have been either transferred to synonymy since or misidentified, and in this study, only 12 taxa were recognized as occurring in {N}ew {C}aledonia. {T}hey belong to the subgenus {S}argassum sect. {B}inderianae ({G}runow) {M}attio et {P}ayri (2), sect. {I}licifoliae ({J}. {A}gardh) {M}attio et {P}ayri (2), sect. {P}olycystae {M}attio et {P}ayri. (1), sect. {S}argassum (4), sect. {Z}ygocarpicae ({J}. {A}gardh) {S}etch. (2), and subgenus {P}hyllotrichia ({A}resh.) {J}. {A}gardh (1). {N}ew {C}aledonian {S}argassum flora appeared as the second richest in the region after the {P}acific coast of {A}ustralia, with which it has shown high similarity, and shared species with all neighboring regions. {O}ne species, {S}. turbinarioides {G}runow, is considered as endemic to {N}ew {C}aledonia. {T}he low genetic diversity detected among several polymorphic species belonging to sect. {S}argassum is also discussed.},
