  abstract = {{W}e aimed to clarify phylogenetic relationships within the pantropical genus {D}iospyros ({E}benaceae sensu lato), and ascertain biogeographical patterns in the {N}ew {C}aledonian endemic species. {W}e used {DNA} sequences from eight plastid regions (rbc{L}, atp{B}, mat{K}, ndh{F}, trn{K} intron, trn{L} intron, trn{L}-trn{F} spacer, and trn{S}-trn{G} spacer) and included 149 accessions representing 119 {D}iospyros species in our analysis. {R}esults from this study confirmed the monophyly of {D}iospyros with good support and provided a clearer picture of the relationships within the genus than in previous studies. {E}vidence from phylogenetic analyses suggests that {D}iospyros colonized {N}ew {C}aledonia multiple times. {T}he four lineages of {D}iospyros in {N}ew {C}aledonia also differ in their degree of diversification. {T}he molecular data indicate that one lineage is paleoendemic and derived from an ancient {A}ustralian species. {T}he other three lineages are more closely related to several {S}outheast {A}sian species; two of them are neoendemics, and one has radiated rapidly and recently.},
