@article{fdi:010046183, title = {{I}nfluence of acculturation among {T}unisian migrants in {F}rance and their past/present exposure to the home country on diet and physical activity}, author = {{M}{\'e}jean, {C}aroline and {T}raissac, {P}ierre and {E}ymard {D}uvernay, {S}abrina and {D}elpeuch, {F}rancis and {M}aire, {B}ernard}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{O}bjective: {T}o study how dietary patterns and physical activity vary with acculturation, and with past and current exposure to socio-cultural norms of the home {C}ountry among {T}unisian migrants. {D}esign: {A} retrospective cohort {S}tudy was conducted using quota sampling (n 150) based on age and residence. {D}ietary intake was assessed using a validated {FFQ}. {P}hysical activity level and dietary aspects were compared according to length of residence (acculturation), age at migration (past exposure) and social ties with the home {C}ountry ({C}urrent exposure). {S}ubjects and setting: {T}unisian migrant men residing in the {S}outh of {F}rance. {R}esults: {M}igrants who had lived in {F}rance for more than 9 years had a higher percentage contribution of meat to energy intake ({P} = 0.04), a higher {N}a intake ({P} = 0.04), a lower percentage contribution of sugar and sweets ({P} = 0.04) and a lower percentage of carbohydrates ({P} = 0.03) than short-term migrants. {M}en who migrated before 21 years of age had a higher {N}a intake than 'late' migrants ({P} = 0.02). {M}en who had distant social ties with {T}unisia had a lower physical activity level ({P} = 0.01) whereas men who had close ties had a higher percentage of fat ({P} = 0.01) and a higher ratio of {MUFA} to {SFA} ({P} = 0.02). {C}onclusions: {A}cculturation led to a convergence of some characteristics to those of the host {P}opulation, while some results (meat and salt consumption) were at variance with other acculturation {S}tudies. {I}-last and current exposure to the home country helped maintain some positive aspects of the diet. {N}evertheless, present dietary changes in {T}unisia could soon lessen these features.}, keywords = {{M}igrants ; {L}ifestyle ; {L}ength of residence ; {A}ge at migration}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{P}ublic {H}ealth {N}utrition}, volume = {12}, numero = {6}, pages = {832--841}, ISSN = {1368-9800}, year = {2009}, DOI = {10.1017/s1368980008003285}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010046183}, }
