  abstract = {{A}n assessment of {S}argassum in {F}rench {P}olynesia was done through the critical revision of the literature, type specimens, and specimens from type localities. {S}argassum samples were newly collected, and four morphotypes were identified on the basis of morphological characters. {M}olecular analysis of the nuclear {ITS}2, chloroplastic partial rbc{LS}, and mitochondrial cox3 markers generated two clades and confirmed the recent divergence suspected between closely related species. {A}lthough 18 different epithets have been attributed to {F}rench {P}olynesian {S}argassum since 1828, only three species are considered valid in this study. {M}ost of these species were transferred to {S}. pacificum {B}ory, the only species present in the {S}ociety {A}rchipelago, while {S}. obtusifolium {J}. {A}gardh was restricted to the {A}ustral {A}rchipelago, and {S}. echinocarpum {J}. {A}gardh was confirmed for the {A}ustral and {G}ambier {A}rchipelagos. {A} morphological identification key is provided, along with descriptions and illustrations for each polymorphic species. {M}oreover, the study of several regional collections underlined similar and low specific diversity among {S}argassum populations in the southeastern {P}acific. {A}s a result of this study, we propose that {S}. bacciferum {J}. {A}gardh var. latiuscula {G}runow, {S}. bisserula f. pacifica {G}runow, {S}. boraborense ({G}runow) {S}etch., {S}. mangarevense ({G}runow) {S}etch., {S}. sociale ({G}runow) {S}etch., and {S}. tahitense {G}runow be considered as heterotypic synonyms of {S}. pacificum. {S}argassum skottsbergii {S}jostedt, {S}. hawaiiensis {D}oty et {N}ewhouse, {S}. divaricatum var. chilensis {G}runow, {S}. obtusifolium {J}. {A}gardh f. chamberlainii {G}runow, and {S}. obtusifolium {J}. {A}gardh f. lendigeroides {G}runow are further regarded as heterotypic synonyms of {S}. obtusifolium.},
