@article{fdi:010044096, title = {{T}he chronology and structure of the western {N}ew {C}aledonian barrier reef tracts}, author = {{C}abioch, {G}uy and {M}ontaggioni, {L}. and {T}houveny, {N}. and {F}rank, {N}. and {S}ato, {T}. and {C}hazottes, {V}. and {D}alamasso, {H}. and {P}ayri, {C}laude and {P}ichon, {M}. and {S}{\'e}mah, {A}nne-{M}arie}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}he mainland of {N}ew {C}aledonia ("{G}rande {T}erre") is surrounded by one of the largest continuous barrier reef system in the world. {I}n order to study the development history and internal structure of this system, drilling operations have been carried out at two sites ({A}medee and {K}endec islets), located on the barrier reef tract extending from the south-west 33 to the north-west of {N}ew {C}aledonia. {T}he extracted cores are 128.50 and 148.75 m in length respectively. {L}ithological and paleoecological descriptions, combined with {U}ranium/{T}horium dating, magnetostratigraphy and nannofossil-based biostratigraphy allowed a reef evolutionary scheme to be drawn. {A}s a result of the interplay between margin subsidence and sea-level changes, 11 reef units formed successively during interglacial episodes at high sea levels in both sites. {D}epending on the subsidence {F}ate of the western shelf-margin, major building in {N}ew {C}aledonia appears to have started during the {MIS} 11 (400,000 yr) from shallow-water carbonate platform deposits older than 780,000 yr. {C}omparing development patterns between the {N}ew {C}aledonian barrier reef and the {A}ustralian {G}reat {B}arrier {R}eef clearly indicates that both global climate and regional tectonic history have been the major controls on reef initiation and growth along both sides of the {C}oral {S}ea. {C}limatic conditions are likely to have not been optimal before the late {Q}uaternary, probably resulting in luxuriant reef expansion only during the last 400,000 yr.}, keywords = {{B}arrier reef ; {N}ew caledonia ; {Q}uaternary reef development and climate ; {C}hronology ; {C}oral sea}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{P}alaeogeography {P}alaeoclimatology {P}alaeoecology}, volume = {268}, numero = {1-2}, pages = {91--105}, ISSN = {0031-0182}, year = {2008}, DOI = {10.1016/j.palaeo.2008.07.014}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010044096}, }
