Our goal was to understand how both factors (social and environmental) can affect such spatial distribution of individuals. Aggregation experiments were conducted on the ant Crematogaster scutellaris: the level of inter-attraction between individuals was characterized and the influence of an environmental factor (light intensity) was studied. Two ethological castes (brood-tenders and foragers) were tested, showing a strong and similar aggregation pattern-although faster for foragers. This difference could be explained by a higher degree of inter-attraction for brood-tenders, resulting in longer interaction time and therefore a slower aggregation rate. We also showed the influence of light conditions by Carrying out experiments in total darkness and under red light. C. scutellaris appeared highly sensitive to the red light, aggregating just underneath it. Nevertheless, the level of aggregation is not affected by the luminosity condition. These results are discussed in relation to the ecology of the species, and are compared with results obtained in another ant species, Lasius niger, which exhibits a similar response to aggregation. We propose, therefore, a general link between the level/ pattern Of aggregation and polyethism in ants.
<targetAudience authority="marctarget">specialized</targetAudience><subject><topic>Spatial distribution</topic><topic>Social pattern</topic><topic>Polyethism</topic><topic>Light intensity</topic><topic>Temperature</topic><topic>Ants</topic></subject><classification authority="local">080 </classification><relatedItem type="host"><titleInfo><title>Journal of Insect Physiology</title></titleInfo><part><detail type="volume"><number>54</number></detail><detail type="issue"><number>9</number></detail><extent unit="pages"><start>1349</start><end>1355</end></extent></part><originInfo><dateIssued>2008</dateIssued></originInfo><identifier type="issn">0022-1910</identifier></relatedItem><identifier type="uri">http://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010044063</identifier><identifier type="doi">10.1016/j.jinsphys.2008.07.013</identifier><location><physicalLocation>IRD Bondy</physicalLocation><shelfLocator>F B010044063</shelfLocator><url usage="primary display" access="object in context">http://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010044063</url><url access="raw object">http://www.documentation.ird.fr/intranet/publi/2008/11/010044063.pdf</url></location><accessCondition type="restriction on access" displayLabel="Accès réservé">Accès réservé (Intranet de l'IRD)</accessCondition><recordInfo><recordContentSource>IRD - Base Horizon / Pleins textes</recordContentSource><recordCreationDate encoding="w3cdtf">2008-12-05</recordCreationDate><recordChangeDate encoding="w3cdtf">2008-12-05</recordChangeDate><recordIdentifier>fdi:010044063</recordIdentifier><languageOfCataloging><languageTerm authority="iso639-2b">fre</languageTerm></languageOfCataloging></recordInfo></mods></modsCollection>
