Levamisole was administered bimonthly to 107 subjects, whereas 105 were controls. Levamisole was highly effective in reducing Ascaris egg loads in the treated group (P &lt; 10(-3) at all visits), whereas it had no effect on schistosomiasis. Subjects 5-14 years of age, treated with levamisole, had a significant increase of their P. falciparum densities compared with controls (P = 0.003). There was no effect of the treatment on children 6 months to 4 years of age, nor on adults &gt; 15 years of age. This study confirms the results of a randomized trial, which showed a negative interaction in those &gt; 5 years of age between Ascaris and malaria parasite density in another Malagasy population, submitted to a higher malaria transmission.
<targetAudience authority="marctarget">specialized</targetAudience><classification authority="local">052 </classification><relatedItem type="host"><titleInfo><title>American Journal of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene</title></titleInfo><part><detail type="volume"><number>77</number></detail><detail type="issue"><number>6</number></detail><extent unit="pages"><start>1091</start><end>1095</end></extent></part><originInfo><dateIssued>2007</dateIssued></originInfo><identifier type="issn">0002-9637</identifier></relatedItem><identifier type="uri">http://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010043753</identifier><location><physicalLocation>IRD Bondy</physicalLocation><shelfLocator>F B010043753</shelfLocator><url usage="primary display" access="object in context">http://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010043753</url></location><recordInfo><recordContentSource>IRD - Base Horizon / Pleins textes</recordContentSource><recordCreationDate encoding="w3cdtf">2008-05-30</recordCreationDate><recordChangeDate encoding="w3cdtf">2010-08-04</recordChangeDate><recordIdentifier>fdi:010043753</recordIdentifier><languageOfCataloging><languageTerm authority="iso639-2b">fre</languageTerm></languageOfCataloging></recordInfo></mods></modsCollection>
