@article{fdi:010042546, title = {{S}edimentary record of terminal {C}retaceous accretions in {E}cuador : the {Y}unguilla {G}roup in the {C}uenca area}, author = {{J}aillard, {E}tienne and {B}engtson, {P}. and {O}rdonez, {M}. and {V}aca, {W}. and {D}hondt, {A}. and {S}uarez, {J}. and {T}oro, {J}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{A} reappraisal of the "{L}ate {C}retaceous {Y}unguilla {F}ormation" of the {C}uenca area enables the definition of four distinct formations, correlatable with those of southwestern {E}cuador. {A} mid- to late-{C}ampanian marine transgression ({J}adan {F}ormation) is overlain by quartz-rich conglomerates of fan-delta to turbiditic fan environment ({Q}uimas {F}ormation) of latest {C}ampanian-earliest {M}aastrichtian age, which {L}ire interpreted as evidence of the accretion of a first oceanic terrane ({S}an {J}uan). {D}isconformable, arkosic turbidites and cherts ({T}abacay {F}ormation) of early {M}aastrichtian age are thought to represent the erosion of the newly accreted oceanic terrane. {A} major unconformity of late {M}aastrichtian age, caused by the accretion of a second oceanic terrane ({G}uaranda), is followed by the deposition of quartz-rich micaceous shelf sandstones ({S}aquisili {F}ormation) of {P}aleocene age. {A} third accretion event (late {P}aleocene) is recorded in coastal {E}cuador. {E}ach accretion event correlates with the uplift and erosion of the {E}astern {C}ordillera and with a sedimentary hiatus in the eastern areas. {I}n {E}cuador, accretion of oceanic terranes contributed to the build up of the {A}ndes through tectonic underplating of low-density material, and the eastern areas did not behave as flexural foreland basins during late {C}retaceous-{P}aleogene times.}, keywords = {{E}cuador ; latest {C}retaceous ; {P}aleocene ; accretions ; uplift ; clastic sedimentation}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{J}ournal of {S}outh {A}merican {E}arth {S}ciences}, volume = {25}, numero = {2}, pages = {133--144}, ISSN = {0895-9811}, year = {2008}, DOI = {10.1016/j.jsames.2007.08.002}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010042546}, }
