@article{fdi:010042026, title = {{B}iogeography of reef fishes of the {F}rench territories in the south pacific}, author = {{K}ulbicki, {M}ichel}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}here are three {F}rench territories in the tropical {P}acific with coral reefs: {N}ew {C}aledonia, {W}allis and {F}utuna, {F}rench {P}olynesia. {T}he reef fish species composition presently known from these three territories is described. {S}imilarities in species composition were analysed within these territories as well as amongst territories. {T}hese checklists were then included in a biogeographical analysis of reef fish species composition based on 64 checklists presently available for the tropical {P}acific. {T}his analysis allowed the definition of 9 biogeographical regions. {N}ew {C}aledonia and {W}allis were assigned to the same region, "{S}outh-{W}est {P}acific" which also included the {G}reat {B}arrier {R}eef, {F}iji, {T}onga and {R}otuma. {F}rench {P}olynesia was associated to the {C}ook {I}slands and {P}itcairn-{D}ucie to form a "{S}outh {P}olynesia" region. {E}ndemism was found to be low in most {F}rench territories (4.4% for {N}ew {C}aledonia with 3.3% for {G}rande {T}erre, 2.5% for {O}uvea, 1.8% for {C}hesterfield; 0% for {W}allis; 6.1% for {F}rench {P}olynesia with 8.3% in the {M}arquesas, 2.5% for {R}apa; 1.9% for {S}ociety, 1.1% for {T}uamotu, 1.1% for {A}ustrales and 0.4% for {G}ambier). {M}ost endemic species were small, secretive and rare. {T}he effects of 4 factors on the distribution of reef fish species were tested: distance to the biodiversity centre, island size, island isolation and latitude. {T}otal diversity was significantly affected by island isolation (p < 0.0001), distance to the biodiversity centre (p < 0.05) and island size (p < 0.05). {T}he effects of these factors were also tested on the relative importance of 17 major families. {T}hese factors had complex effects, but the major trends indicated that {L}abridae, {S}caridae, {A}canthuridae, {C}haetodontidae, {M}ullidae, {S}erranidae, {P}omacanthidae, {B}alistidae were primarily influenced by island size, {P}omacentridae, {L}utjanidae, {T}etraodontidae and {C}aesionidae were mainly influenced by latitude and {H}aemulidae, {N}ernipteridae, {S}iganidae and {L}ethrinidae were mainly influenced by the distance. to the biodiversity centre.}, keywords = {reef fish ; biogeography ; pacific ; new {C}aledonia ; french {P}olynesia ; wallis}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{C}ybium}, volume = {31}, numero = {2}, pages = {285--298}, ISSN = {0399-0974}, year = {2007}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010042026}, }
