@article{fdi:010041616, title = {{E}nso and rainfall along the {Z}ongo valley ({B}olivia) from the {A}ltiplano to the {A}mazon basin}, author = {{R}onchail, {J}. and {G}allaire, {R}obert}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}he location of eight rainfall stations in the {Z}ongo valley ({E}astern {C}ordillera - {B}olivia) between 1195 and 4750 meters above sea level (masl) gives a unique opportunity to study the time-space rainfall variability between two regions, i.e. the {A}ltiplano and the {A}mazonian lowlands of {B}olivia, that are differently related to {E}l {N}ino-{S}outhern {O}scillation ({ENSO}) events in the {P}acific. {I}n the central part of the lowlands, a {L}a {N}ina/dry signal is observed during the peak of the rainy season ({F}ebruary) and around wintertime ({M}ay and {S}eptember). {G}oing toward the {A}ndes and on the foothills up to 1500 masl, no {ENSO} signal has been found. {O}n the median slopes of the {Z}ongo valley, between 1800 and 3500 m, a strong {N}ino/dry signal is depicted on an annual timescale and during summer. {I}n {F}ebruary, a {N}ina/wet signal is also significant. {G}oing westward through the high {A}ndes and the eastern {A}ltiplano, this signal weakens. {O}n the western edge of the {A}ltiplano, an {E}l {N}ino/dry and {L}a {N}ina/wet signals are clearly identified. {I}n the central lowlands and on the western {A}ltiplano, {ENSO} indexes account for nearly 25% of rainfall variability, and for as much as 50% along the median slopes of the eastern {C}ordillera, in the {Z}ongo valley. {T}his finding deserves further study as previous researches have shown that in the {A}ndes the best relationship between rainfall and equatorial {P}acific sea-surface temperature ({SST}) is in the western {A}ltiplano, far from the {A}mazonian source of moisture. {C}opyright ({C}) 2006 {R}oyal {M}eteorological {S}ociety.}, keywords = {rainfall ; rainfall variability ; {ENSO} ; {A}ndes ; {A}ltiplano ; {A}mazon basin ; {B}olivia}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{I}nternational {J}ournal of {C}limatology}, volume = {26}, numero = {9}, pages = {1223--1236}, ISSN = {0899-8418}, year = {2006}, DOI = {10.1002/joc.1296}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010041616}, }
