@article{fdi:010041603, title = {{N}uclear and mitochondrial {DNA} markers indicate unidirectional gene flow of {I}ndo-{P}acific to {A}tlantic bigeye tuna ({T}hunnus obesus) populations, and their admixture off southern {A}frica}, author = {{D}urand, {J}ean-{D}ominique and {C}ollet, {A}deline and {C}how, {S}. and {G}uinand, {B}. and {B}orsa, {P}hilippe}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{A} sharp genetic break separates {A}tlantic from {I}ndo-{P}acific bigeye tuna ({T}hunnus obesus) populations, as the frequencies of two major mitochondrial (mt) {DNA} types (alpha and beta) found in this species are different across the tip of southern {A}frica. {T}he level of nucleotide divergence between mt{DNA} types alpha and beta is of the same order as that between reproductively isolated taxa. {T}o further investigate the genetic structure of bigeye tuna over its distribution range and in the contact zone off southern {A}frica, bigeye tuna samples collected between 1992 and 2001 (including samples from a previous mt{DNA} survey) were characterized for four nuclear {DNA} loci and for mt{DNA}. {N}uclear markers did not support the hypothesis that alpha and beta mitochondria characterize sibling species. {S}ignificant allele-frequency differences at one intronic locus ({GH}2) and one microsatellite locus (mu 208) were found between {A}tlantic and {I}ndo-{P}acific samples, although the level of nuclear genetic differentiation ({W}eir and {C}ockerham's (theta) over cap = 0.025 to 0.042) was much lower than in mt{DNA} ((theta) over cap = 0.664 to 0.807). {P}robabilistic {B}ayesian assignment of individuals to a population confirmed that southern {A}frican bigeye tuna samples represent a simple mixture of individuals from {A}tlantic and {I}ndian stocks that do not interbreed, with a higher contribution from {I}ndian {O}cean individuals (about 2/3 vs. 1/3).}, keywords = {}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{M}arine {B}iology}, volume = {147}, numero = {2}, pages = {313--322}, ISSN = {0025-3162}, year = {2005}, DOI = {10.1007/s00227-005-1564-2}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010041603}, }
