@article{fdi:010040877, title = {{G}enomic reticulation indicates mixed ancestry in {S}outhern-{H}emisphere {M}ytilus spp. mussels}, author = {{B}orsa, {P}hilippe and {D}aguin, {C}. and {B}ierne, {N}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{P}revious surveys of allozyme variation in smooth-shell {M}ytilus spp. mussels have reported the presence in the {S}outhern {H}emisphere of both {M}ytilus edulis and {M}ytilus galloprovincialis mussels. {I}n the present study, nuclear {DNA} markers mac-1 and {G}lu-5'/{G}lu-3', both diagnostic for {N}orthern-{H}emisphere {M}. edulis and {M}. galloprovincialis, were used to further characterize the nuclear genomes of {M}. edulis from {K}erguelen and {M}. galloprovincialis from {T}asmania. {G}enomic reticulation was observed, with typical {M}. edulis allelomorphs fixed in both populations at locus mac-1 whereas, at locus {G}lu-5'/{G}lu-3', allelomorphs characteristic of {M}. galloprovincialis were present in {K}erguelen and nearly fixed in {T}asmania. {K}erguelen mussels had a genome of mixed {M}. edulis and {M}. galloprovincialis ancestry without evidence of barriers to merging as shown by {H}ardy-{W}einberg and linkage equilibrium. {T}asmanian mussels possessed a predominantly {M}. galloprovincialis genomic background introgressed by {M}. edulis allelomorphs at locus mac-1. {G}enetic drift superimposed on ancient hybridization and introgression may explain the genomic reticulation observed in both {K}erguelen and {T}asmanian mussels. {T}here was no evidence of a recent introduction of {N}orthern-{H}emisphere {M}. galloprovincialis or {M}. edulis to {K}erguelen or {T}asmania.}, keywords = {antitropical distribution ; geographical structure ; hybridization ; introgression ; intron length polymorphism ; nuclear {DNA}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{B}iological {J}ournal of the {L}innean {S}ociety}, volume = {92}, numero = {4}, pages = {747--754}, ISSN = {0024-4066}, year = {2007}, DOI = {10.1111/j.1095-8312.2007.00917.x}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010040877}, }
