@article{fdi:010037767, title = {{R}elationships between glycaemic abnormalities, obesity and insulin resistance in nondiabetic {P}olynesians of {N}ew {C}aledonia}, author = {{D}efay, {R}oselyne and {J}aussent, {I}. and {L}acroux, {A}nnie and {F}ontbonne, {A}nnick}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{O}bjective: {P}olynesians in {N}ew {C}aledonia have an increased risk for developing diabetes, compared to {M}elanesians or {E}uropeans. {T}hey are also more prone to obesity. {T}he aim of this study was to analyse differences in the pre-diabetic state that may explain the varying susceptibility to diabetes between these three ethnic groups, focusing on the balance between insulin resistance and capacity of pancreatic cells to secrete insulin. {D}esign and subjects: {T}he {CALDIA} {S}tudy is a population-based cross-sectional survey of diabetes prevalence conducted in {N}ew {C}aledonia. {A}ll participants who did not have diabetes, according to the results of a 0-2 h oral glucose tolerance test (n = 392), were selected for analysis. {R}esults: {C}ompared to {E}uropeans, {P}olynesians and {M}elanesians had significantly higher body mass indices ({BMI}) and waist-to-hip ratios ({WHR}s). {P}olynesians had higher fasting plasma glucose values than {E}uropeans or {M}elanesians (6.03 mmol/l, vs 5.78 and 5.46, respectively; {P} < 0.0001). {F}asting plasma insulin level and the estimate of insulin resistance by homeostasis model assessment were not significantly different between the three ethnic groups. {H}omeostasis model assessment estimate of beta-cell secretory capacity was lower in {P}olynesians compared to the two other ethnic groups (83.1 m{U}/mmol, vs 119.3 and 125.2, respectively; {P} < 0.02). {C}onclusion: {D}espite a high prevalence of central obesity, as judged by high {BMI} and {WHR}, in {P}olynesians of {N}ew {C}aledonia, their high risk of diabetes may be more strongly related to a defect in insulin secretion capacity than to insulin resistance.}, keywords = {epidemiology ; {P}olynesians ; insulin resistance ; insulin secretion ; type 2 diabetes}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{I}nternational {J}ournal of {O}besity}, volume = {31}, numero = {1}, pages = {109--113}, ISSN = {0307-0565}, year = {2007}, DOI = {10.1038/sj.ijo.0803384}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010037767}, }
