  abstract = {{A} review of the goatfishes of the genus {U}peneus ({P}erciformes: {M}ullidae) from {N}ew {C}aledonia and the {C}hesterfield {B}ank, with a new species and four new records. {Z}oological {S}tudies 45(3): 298-307. {O}nly 2 species of the goatfish genus {U}peneus have been recorded from {N}ew {C}aledonia: {U}. tragula {R}ichardson and {U}. vittatus ({F}orsskal). {U}peneus filifer ({O}gilby) was listed by name only in a report on experimental trawling on the {C}hesterfield {B}ank. {N}ew records are herein reported of {U}. australiae {K}im and {N}akaya, {U}. guttatus ({D}ay), {U}. moluccensis ({B}leeker), and {U}. sulphurus {C}uvier for the {N}ew {C}aledonia region, and {U}. mouthami is described as a new species. {A} key, diagnoses, and color illustrations are given for all 8 species; summary notes on food habits are provided.},
