@article{fdi:010035636, title = {{N}utritional status of {A}merindian children from the {B}eni {R}iver (lowland {B}olivia) as related to environmental, maternal and dietary factors}, author = {{B}{\'e}n{\'e}fice, {E}ric and {M}onroy, {S}elma {L}una and {J}imenez, {S}. and {L}opez, {R}onald}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{O}bjectives: {T}o report the nutritional status of children aged up to 15 years and their mothers living in a remote {A}mazonian area of {B}olivia, and to study its main social, familial and maternal determinants. {S}etting: {F}ifteen {B}eni {R}iver communities located at the foot of the {A}ndes. {D}esign: {C}ross-sectional survey of riverside populations. {A}ll childbearing mothers and their children in the 15 communities were examined. {M}ethods: {I}nformation on household production, dietary habits and demography was collected. {I}ndividual clinical, anthropometric and parasitological examinations were carried out. {S}ubjects: {A} total of 631 persons were examined: 171 mothers and 460 children and adolescents aged 0 to 15 years. {R}esults: {T}here were no cases of severe wasting, but 41% of 0-5-year-olds and 36% of 5-10-year-olds were stunted. {A}mong 346 stool specimens examined, 75% were positive for at least one helminth. {D}iversity of food and quality of diet were satisfactory in 54% of households, but 27% had low diversity scores. {M}others were lighter and shorter than those observed at the national level: 20% had height below 145 cm. {P}revalence of anaemia (42%) was also higher. {I}n pre-school children, multivariate analysis indicated a relationship between growth retardation and household factors such as dietary quality, ethnic group and clinical state, but not maternal anthropometry. {I}n contrast, in school-age children and adolescents, growth retardation was related to maternal characteristics. {C}onclusions: {G}rowth retardation appeared mainly during the weaning period and did not seem to improve thereafter. {T}o ameliorate this situation, an effort should be made to prevent common parasitic and infectious diseases in young children. {F}ollow-up of pregnant mothers during pregnancy and delivery also needs to be reinforced.}, keywords = {anthropometry ; stunting ; food diversity ; helminths ; {A}mazon ; {T}acana}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{P}ublic {H}ealth {N}utrition}, volume = {9}, numero = {3}, pages = {327--335}, ISSN = {1368-9800}, year = {2006}, DOI = {10.1079/{PHN}2006852}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010035636}, }
