The paper provides an analysis of the intellectual diaspora networks in terms of their viability as a response to the brain drain phenomenon. 43 expatriate knowledge networks have been identified. These networks, tied to 32 countries, although not uniform in their organisation, all share the common goal of using their highly skilled expatriates towards the development of their home country. Most of them have been around since the early 1990's and there are thus important lessons to be learned regarding their successes and difficulties in terms of the remote mobilisation of highly skilled human resources.
