@article{fdi:010023734, title = {{T}racing the {N}orth {A}tlantic deep water through the {R}omanche and {C}hain fracture zones with chlorofluoromethanes}, author = {{M}essias, {M}.{J}. and {A}ndri{\'e}, {C}hantal and {M}{\'e}mery, {L}. and {M}ercier, {H}}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{C}hlorofluoromethanes ({CFM}s) {F}-11 and {F}-12 were measured during {A}ugust 1991 and {N}ovember 1992 in the {R}omanche and {C}hain {F}racture {Z}ones in the equatorial {A}tlantic. {T}he {CFM} distributions showed the two familiar signatures of the more recently ventilated {N}orth {A}tlantic {D}eep {W}ater ({NADW}) seen in the {D}eep {W}estern {B}oundary {C}urrent ({DWBC}). {T}he upper maximum is centered around 1600 m at the level of the {U}pper {N}orth {A}tlantic {D}eep {W}ater ({UNADW}) and the deeper maximum around 3800 m at level of the {L}ower {N}orth {A}tlantic {D}eep {W}ater ({LNADW}). {T}hese observations suggest a bifurcation at the western boundary, some of the {NADW} spreading eastward with the {LNADW} entering the {R}omanche and the {C}hain {F}racture {Z}ones. {T}he upper core (sigma1.5 = 34.70 kg/m3) was observed eastward as far as 5°{W}. {T}he deep {CFM} maximum (sigma4 = 45.87 kg/m3), associated with an oxygen maximum, decreased dramatically at the sills of the {R}omanche {F}racture {Z}one : east of the sills, the shape of the {CFM} profiles reflects mixing and deepening of isopycnals. {M}ean apparent water "ages" computed from the {F}-11/{F}-12 ratio are estimated. {N}ear the bottom, no enrichment in {CFM}s is detected at the entrance of the fracture zones in the cold water mass originating from the {A}ntarctic {B}ottom {W}ater flow.
