@article{fdi:010023452, title = {{P}hylogenetic relationships of mormyrid electric fishes ({M}ormyridae; {T}eleostei) inferred from cytochrome b sequences}, author = {{L}avou{\'e}, {S}. and {B}igorne, {R}{\'e}my and {L}ecointre, {G}. and {A}gn{\`e}se, {J}ean-{F}ran{\c{c}}ois}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}he {M}ormyridae are {A}frican osteoglossomorph fresh-water fishes of great interest because of their electric organs. {T}hey have become an important model in studies of electrophysiology and behavior but their phylogenetic relationships are poorly known. {P}hylogenetic relationships among mormyrids were determined by comparing cytochrome b sequences (588 bp) of 27 species belonging to 15 genera. {R}esults showed that the #{P}etrocephalus$ species (subfamily {P}etrocephalinae) are the sister-group of all other mormyrids (subfamilly {M}ormyrinae). {T}he monophyly of the {M}ormyrinae was supported, as well as three original intra-{M}ormyrinae clades. {T}hree genera, #{M}arcusenius$, #{P}ollimyrus$, and #{B}rienomyrus$, were found to be polyphyletic with high support. {S}ome of these polyphylies are tentatively explained. {T}he results confirmed that the lateral ethmoid bone was lost several times within the {M}ormyrinae. {T}hese findings emphasize the necessity of systematic studies and taxonomic revision of the {M}omyridae. {T}he tree obtained from the mitochondrial data showed a single rise of each electrocyte type except for electrocyte with penetrating stalk ("{P}a"). {C}onstraining the single occurence of electrocyte type {P}a did not require an excessive number of extra steps (1.86%).
