@article{fdi:010021590, title = {{T}hermohalobacter berrensis gen. nov., sp. nov., a thermophilic, strictly halophilic bacterium from a solar saltern}, author = {{C}ayol, {J}.{L}. and {D}ucerf, {S}. and {P}atel, {B}.{K}.{C}. and {G}arcia, {J}ean-{L}ouis and {T}homas, {P}. and {O}llivier, {B}ernard}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{A} new thermophilic, strictly halophilic, anaerobic, non-sporulating rod-shaped bacterium, measuring 0.5 x 3.0-8.0 microns and designated strain {CTT}3{T}, was isolated from a solar saltern. {S}train {CTT}3{T} stained {G}ram-positive, was motile by means of laterally inserted flagella, had a genome {G}+{C} content of 33 mol% and grew optimally at 65°{C} and p{H} 7.0 with 5% {N}a{C}l. {T}he strain also grew readily at 70°{C} in the presence of 15% {N}a{C}l. {S}train {CTT}3{T} fermented cellobiose, fructose, glucose, maltose, mannitol, mannose, sucrose, glycerol, {N}-acetylglucosamine, starch, pyruvate and bio-{T}rypticase. {I}t produced acetate, ethanol, {H}2 and presumably {CO}2 from glucose. 16{S} r{RNA} gene sequence analysis indicated that it is a member of cluster {XII} of the #{C}lostridiales$ and related genera of the subphylum of the {G}ram-positive bacteria containing genomes of low {G}+{C} content. {I}ts phenotypic and phylogenetic characteristics clearly differentiated it from all other members of this cluster. {B}ased on the findings it is proposed that strain {CTT}3{T} be designated as a new species of a new genus, #{T}hermohalobacter berrensis$ gen. nov., sp. nov. {T}he type strain is {CTT}3{T} (={CNCM} 105955{T}).
