@inproceedings{fdi:010017903, title = {{M}arine fishing industry in the {M}ekong delta, {V}ietnam : present status and recommendations for future development}, author = {{T}uan, {N}.{A}. and {P}huong, {N}.{T}. and {H}ung, {H}.{P}. and {W}eigel, {J}ean-{Y}ves}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{I}n 1994, the {M}ekong {D}elta had 14,337 fishing boats. {T}hey exploited 404,500 tons of products from 220,000 km2 of the {E}conomic {E}xcluse {Z}one, that covers respectively 44% and 60% of national and regional fisheries' production. {T}raditionally developed since the beginning of the twentieth century, the industry has undergone different stages by political changes. {I}n recent years, dramatic changes arose from the motorisation and the introduction of high productive new fishing gears (trawl net, gill net and encircling net) for off-shore fishing to prevent the exploitation in the coastal areas. {M}eanwhile, longlines, stow nets, scrape gears are also important. {T}he private sector covers a large proportion in the total production output. {C}ost structure and profitability depend on fishing types, scales and sectors. {T}he study also presents recommendtions for further development of the industry. {P}articular emphasis is placed on gaining knowledge of resource management and fishing technology.
