  abstract = {{F}or the past twelve years, the river of {J}uwana has seen many changes. {T}he harbour has been updated and accommodates a larger number of boats, namely the big {J}avanese purse seiners. {F}ishing activities expand towards a semi-industrial fishery exclusively reserved for men. {T}he production of fish increases considerably and gives rise to numerous new activities directly connected to this fishery. {W}ithin this new context, women seized new opportunities. {T}heir gold jewellery provides a secure capital to run their enterprise. {T}oday, part of the distribution of fish is mainly in the hands of these ladies. {O}ver the years, some of them have become real entrepreneurs and play an active role in {J}uwana's fish auction market. {W}hether from the formal or the informal sector, women from {B}endar occupy a central position in their community : some supply the market with informal fish production from the purse seiner boats while others supply the fish processing home industry both at the formal and informal level.
