@article{fdi:010017468, title = {{P}etrology of {M}atthew and {H}unter volcanoes, {S}outh {N}ew {H}ebrides island arc ({S}outhwest {P}acific)}, author = {{M}aillet, {P}atrick and {M}onzier, {M}ichel and {L}ef{\`e}vre, {C}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{M}atthew and {H}unter, the two southernmost active volcanoes of the {N}ew {H}ebrides island arc (southwest {P}acific) differ markedly from the other (mainly tholeitic) {Q}uaternary volcanoes of this arc. {G}eodynamically related to the {N}ew {H}ebrides subduction zone, they also lie close to the southern limb of the active expanding ridge of the {N}orth {F}iji {B}asin. {B}oth volcanoes are made up of acid, medium-{K}, calcalkaline orogenic andesites, containing a variety of inclusions (pyroxene- and gabbroic cumulates, as well as doleritic cognate inclusions). {T}his paper presents the first systematic petrographic and chemical study of these volcanics and their inclusions. {T}race-element geochemistry and rare-earth element modelling suggest that the two volcanoes developed from successive batches of similar parental magmas, originating from limited partial fusion of garnet peridotite in the mantle wedge. {V}arious degrees of fractional crystallization ot these batches led to the formation of three volcanic suites: {H}unter (little fractionated), {W}est-{M}atthew (moderately fractionated) and {E}ast-{M}atthew (highly fractionated). {M}oreover, on {M}atthew island, no correlation exists between the degree of fractionation and the eruptive chronology, the youngest edifice ({W}est-{M}atthew) being less evolved than the older on ({E}ast-{M}atthew).
