After a long history of disregard by academic geographers, non academic geographic knowledge is now recognised as both an interesting and valuable source of information. Through the analysis of the three main ideas that guide Inuit understanding of the land, it is shown here that such studies can lead to the identification of the core values that lie at the heart of each culture.
