First, strong links between these Churinga, and the Aborigenes' mythical past (The Dreaming) are explored. There follows a short description of the object itself, then its central function in male initiation rites, its use as a bridge between past and present. The main argument states that during a crisis, the aboriginal contemporary uses of Churinga allow people to reinforce links with the Dreaming, to assert an ethnic identity, and to maintain a strong relationship with ancestral lands.
