  abstract = {{T}his paper deals with contemporary uses of the {C}huringa, an {A}boriginal ritual object. {F}irst, strong links between these {C}huringa, and the {A}borigenes' mythical past ({T}he {D}reaming) are explored. {T}here follows a short description of the object itself, then its central function in male initiation rites, its use as a bridge between past and present. {T}he main argument states that during a crisis, the aboriginal contemporary uses of {C}huringa allow people to reinforce links with the {D}reaming, to assert an ethnic identity, and to maintain a strong relationship with ancestral lands.
