In the highlands of the Peul country of Guinea, the landscape consists of islets of hedge-land among grassy plains. In the heart of the open field, a mosaïc of living fences forms an enclosure for the house gardens and the intensely cultivated fields. This article presents a geographic itinerary which, starting from the landscape, proceeds step by step towards the secret sense of spatial organization. The hedge, an omnipresent element of Fouta Djalon landscapes, is a "geographic being", one of importance for agricultural and cultural research. (Résumé d'auteur)
