  abstract = {{T}his article sheds light on sacred places and their symbolic configuration in the central highlands of {M}adagascar. {O}ccupyng a very small land area in contrast to that devoted to agriculture, they are cultural constructions that mark out the territory. {S}ome are intentionally not maintained, while others stand out as reduced-scale reproductions of a landscape model elaborated over time, such as the small rice valley. {T}hus, one moves from a lifesize landscape to a miniature one in which each element carries symbolic meaning.
