Yet the concept marginality has still not been precisely defined. Furthermore, it must be operationalized to include both the cultural and spatial dimensions. After reviewing the contribution of the social sciences, especially geography and sociology, this article sets out to test the relevance of a social psychological approach to the problem of marginality, defined as a state of a person or a group that is between two territories, which correspond either to spatial and cultural integration or to spatial and cultural exclusion.
