Prostitution in Thailand, though illegal since 1960, is a major societal phenomenon and a significant source of income. Its development cannot be explained by assumed cultural predispositions. On the contrary, foreign elements often played a decisive role, at least since the end of the 19th century. In many cases, prostitutes, procurers and customers were brought in from neighbouring and more distant countries. (Résumé d'auteur)
