The societies of the west coast of Santo, in Vanuatu, cultivate irrigated taro in pond field systems. This is a very intensive agroforestry system, which produces the main food plants and some cash crops. It is also a complex and fragile system in which natural constraints, social links, kinship and economic factors play a part. Its ultimate function is to be featured as a well-known landscape, for which a farmer can be remembered. (Résumé d'auteur)
