Javanese home gardens (pekarangan) not only constitute a sustainable agro-ecosystem and an important source of food and income for most rural families, but they also play a very important social and cultural role in family and village life. However, they have so far been largely neglected in research on rural Java. Written for a man who has left us unforgettable pages on the "magical gardens" of Tanna, this article is an attempt to illustrate their "discreet charm". (Résumé d'auteur)
