%X The Polynesian society of the Samoan archipelago is one which has best sought to and best succeeded in preserving its structures, cultural identity and spatial reference in the Pacific, this in the face of external influences and even colonial domination. Paradoxically, since independence, certain basic tonets of fa'a Samoa appear to be under threat through "modernisation" linked to emigration, the monetarisation of the economy, cultural globalism and an increasing emphasis on individualism.
