  abstract = {{F}or a long time, recovering the land of their fathers (under colonial control) has been the main target for the {M}elanesian community in {N}ew {C}aledonia. {A}fter 1985, the objective has been changing to recovering sovereignty. {B}ut every day, the unbalance between rural {K}anak tradition and urban cosmopolitan life arises, so clashes are going on between {K}anaks themselves as they live more and more in different political, social and economic spaces. {P}ro-independance {K}anak leaders are expecting changes in the near future both in terms of their economy (constructing a nickel melting plant in the {N}orthern pro-{K}anak province) and of politics (transforming the {F}rench {O}verseas {T}erritory into a {F}ree {A}ssociate {S}tate), but the future is still unclear : what kind of solidarity in the {P}acific area, with {A}ustrialia and {N}ew {Z}ealand or {A}sian industrial powers ? {W}hat kind of links with {F}rance to protect the standard of living and political stability between ethnic communicites today ?
