%X There are multiple levels of identity within any given community in Vanuatu today, these levels being predicated on traditional language groupings and allegiances, religious and political affiliation, as well as village, island, provincial or national considerations. The level in focus at any given time may vary according to the issue under consideration. What is particular to Vanuatu, however, is the linguistic phenomenon which overlaps spatially, this overlapping or chaining phenomenon having significant cultural and societal correlates.
