%X The North-East, which can be called a sort of Moroccan "Far-East", constitutes the borderline with Algeria and is not well integrated into the Moroccan economic framework. It is more or less a region turned towards the exterior, depending on external resources : emigration, smuggling with Algeria and Melilla, Maghrebian tourism. Ever since the colonial period, when it was a sort of ethnic melting pot, the North-East has received many diverse foreign cultural influences. This makes of it a special region in Morocco.
