  abstract = {{T}his paper describes a system of production in relation to its notion of space and society : the idea of limits is not based on the simple frame of tesselated adjacent territories, as usually seen in crop systems. {I}n {M}ali, among the fishermen of the inner delta of the river {N}iger in {M}ali, territorial limits do exist, but they are flexible and temporary, with very versatile features. {M}uch more than division, they imply agreement, and are carefully governed, in much the same way as are the fishing places themselves. {T}emporal limits are more clear. {H}ere, three levels of spatial organisation are tackled. {A} modern and nowadays democratic decentralized territorial management establishes standardized and functional divisions of space which may, once again, disrupt the balance of the rather unique social running of this continental halieutic area.
