  abstract = {{M}onsoon climate is the main factor governing the characteristics of the {J}ava {S}ea waters. {S}easonal water exchange with the {F}lores {S}ea determines the distribution pattern of abundance and occurrence of the pelagic fishes. {G}roups of oceanic and neritic species enter the {J}ava {S}ea, following higher salinity waters coming from the eastern archipelago, in the young stage, while a group of coastal ones tends to stay in the {J}ava {S}ea during the year. {I}nterannual variability, as indicated by the oscillation of the rainfall, could be an important external factor controlling long term variability of the abundance of pelagic fishes in the {J}ava {S}ea.
