@article{fdi:010015351, title = {{G}enetic diversity among {X}anthomonas campestris strains pathogenic for small grains}, author = {{B}ragard, {C}. and {V}erdier, {V}al{\'e}rie and {M}araite, {H}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{A} collection of 51 {X}anthiomonas campestris strains from throughout the world was studied to detect and assess genetic diversity among pathogens of small grains. {I}solates from barley, bread wheat, bromegrass, canary grass, cassava, maize, orchard grass, rice, rough stalked meadow grass, rye, timothy, and triticale were analyzed by pathogenicity tests on bread wheat cv. {A}londra and barley cv. {C}orona, indirect immunofluores cence, and restriction fragment length polymorphism ({RFLP})). {T}hree probes were used for the {RFLP} analysis. {T}hey were an acetylaminofluorene labelled 16{S}+23{S} r{RNA} probe from {E}scherichia coli and two 32{P} labelled restriction fragments from either piashidic (p{BSF}2) or chromosomal (p{BSS}) {DNA} of {X} campestris pv. manihotis. {S}trains clustered in 9 and 20 groups with the r{RNA} probe and the p{BSF}2 {DNA} probe, respectively. {S}trains of {X}. campestris pv. graminis, {X}. campestris pv. phleipratensis, and {X}. campestris pv. poae are shown to be related but are also distinguishable by {RF}'{LP} patterns, serolog, and pathogenicity on bread wheat. {S}trains pathogenic only for barley and not for wheat grouped together. {A}nother group is temporarily designated deviant {X}. campestris pv. undulosa. {T}hese {S}outh {A}merican isolates from bread wheat did not react by indirect immunofiuorescence and produced atypical lesions in pathogenicity tests. {T}he results stress the need to perform pathogenicity tests before strains are named at the pathovar level. {T}he importance of the different probes used for epidemiological studies or phylogenetic studies of closely related strains is underlined.}, keywords = {{PATHOLOGIE} {VEGETALE} ; {BACTERIE} ; {POUVOIR} {PATHOGENE} ; {DISTANCE} {GENETIQUE} ; {DIVERSITE} {GENETIQUE}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{A}pplied and {E}nvironmental {M}icrobiology}, volume = {61}, numero = {3}, pages = {1020--1026}, ISSN = {0099-2240}, year = {1995}, DOI = {10.1128/aem.61.3.1020-1026.1995}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010015351}, }
