  abstract = {{B}ecause of the imprecision of the known surface and the real distribution of the tepetates along the neovolcanic belt, as well as the agro-socio-economical problems that cause the presence of this volcanic indurated level in the fields, we proposed to test a methodology which uses both teledetection and {GIS} on 1/25,000 scale to identify the area with tepetates. {T}his work, based on previous knowledge of natural and anthropogenic reasons for the apparition of tepetates, aims to precise if information gathered in the {M}exico and {T}laxcala valleys is also valid for the rest of the neovolcanic belt. {W}e created a map of potential tepetate presence with a {GIS} and confronted it with teledetection views and field information. {T}hen we crossed agro-socio-economic data to determine types of agriculture and life conditions. {C}rossing this map with those of the presence of the tepetates, we could define conditions and propositions for the generation of new soil from tepetates.
