  abstract = {{T}he ethnobotanic database {PHARMEL} on {A}frican medicinal plants. {T}his data bank was created in 1986 with the help of the "{A}gence de {C}oop{\'e}ration {C}ulturelle et {T}echnique" ({ACCT}), an international {A}gency covering 40 french speaking countries and working for the development of cultural and technical relationships between them. {PHARMEL} ({PHAR} for pharmacopea, {ME} for medicinal plant and {L} for traditional) has the two main following aims : to gather together the data concerning the uses of medicinal plants in folk {M}edicine (mainly in {A}frica) and synthesis this information ; to promote a network with local or national databanks having facilities to exchange their data between them and so increase the total volume of treated and thus available data. {I}n order to standardize the collection and capture of the complex data included in the traditional prescriptions, a booklet was published in 1989 by the {ACCT} with all the codification concerning the characteristics of used plants, the different methods of drug preparation and administration and finally therapeutic indications (disease type or physiological effects). {F}urthermore, a user friendly software for data capture has been developed. {N}ow, {PHARMEL} contains the data issued from the traditional prescriptions. {T}his is included in books or papers published by {ACCT} and other authors concerning ethnobotanical knowledge of the 21 following countries : {B}enin, {C}entral {A}frica {R}ep., {C}omores, {C}ongo, {G}abon, {M}ali, {M}aurice, {N}iger, {S}eychelles, {T}ogo, {C}anaries {I}slands, {B}urkina {F}aso, {I}vory {C}oast, {S}enegal, {B}urundi, {R}wanda, {Z}a{\¨ie}re, {K}enya, {Z}imbabwe, {M}adagascar and {D}ominique.
