This review summarises the information on relationships between herbicides and non-target microorganisms and invertebrates that was obtained from experiments in ricefields, with ricefield soil or with organisms isolated from ricefields. It considers successively (i) the microbial degradation of herbicides, (ii) their impact on algae and cyanobacteria, non photodependant microorganisms, and non-target invertebrates, and (iii) the possible detrimetal long-term effects. Current knowledge is biaised, very fragmentary, and partly outdated. Available data show that herbicides applied on soil at recommended levels rarely had a detrimental effect on microbial populations or their activities. Herbicides, applied in combination with insecticides, affected invertebrate populations more than the microorganisms, inducing the blooming of individual species of floodwater zooplankton and reducing populations of aquatic oligochaetes in soil. Available information raises concerns regarding the scarcity of data on long-term effects of herbicides on (i) microorganisms, primary producers, and invertebrates of importance to soil fertility, (ii) soil microbial biomass, (iii) predators of rice pests and vectors, and (iv) microbial metabolism of herbicides.(Résumé d'auteur) %$ 074SOLMIC ; 074FAUSOL02
