The number of larvae per stem for both stem borers, i.e. #Busseola fusca$ (Feller) (#Lepidoptera$, #Noctuidae$) and #Eldana saccharina$ Walker (#Lepidoptera$, #Pyralidae$), was similar at different densities of planting in rainy conditions but was higher in low density crops in water stress conditions. The number of larvae of the cob borer #Mussidia nigrivenella$ Ragonot (#Lepidoptera$, #Pyralidae$) per plant did not vary with crop density. Crop losses caused by borers decreased when the stand density was reduced and increased when the crop was suffering from water stress. The interactions between the various yield components and the compensation mechanisms that occurred, which were depending on the attack patterns, were studied. (Résumé d'auteur) %$ 076RAVPLA03
