@article{fdi:010009468, title = {{F}rom strike-slip faulting to oblique subduction : a survey of the alpine fault-{P}uysegur trench transition, {N}ew {Z}ealand, results of cruise {G}eodynz-sud {L}eg 2}, author = {{D}elteil, {J}. and {C}ollot, {J}ean-{Y}ves and {H}erzer, {R}. and {C}almant, {S}t{\'e}phane and {C}hristoffel, {D}. and {C}offin, {M}. and {F}erri{\`e}re, {J}. and {L}amarche, {G}eoffroy and {L}ebrun, {J}.{F}. and {M}auffret,{A}. and {P}ontoise, {B}ernard and {P}opoff, {M}. and {R}uellan, {E}. and {S}osson, {M}. and {S}utherland, {R}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}he {G}eodynz-sud cruise on board the {R}/{V} l'{A}talante collected bathymetric, side-scan sonar and seismic reflection data along the obliquely convergent boundary between the {A}ustralian and {P}acific plates southwest of the {S}outh {I}sland, {N}ew {Z}ealand. {T}he survey area extended from 44°05'{S} to 49°40'{S}, covering the transition zone between the offshore extension of the {A}lpine {F}ault and the {P}uysegur {T}rench and {P}uysegur {R}idge. {B}ased on variations in the nature and structure of the crust on either side of the margin, the plate boundary zone can be divided into three domains with distinctive structural and sedimentary characteristics. {T}he northern domain involves subduction of probably thinned continental crust of the southern {C}hallenger {P}lateau beneath the continental crust of {F}iordland. {I}t is characterized by thick sediments on the downgoing slab and a steep continental slope disrupted by fault scarps and canyons. {T}he middle domain marks the transition between subduction of likely continental and oceanic crust defined by a series of en echelon ridges on the downgoing slab. {T}his domain is characterized by a large collapse terrace on the continental slope which appears to be due to the collision of the en echelon ridges with the plate margin. {T}he southern domain involves subduction of oceanic crust beneath continental and oceanic crust. {T}his domain is characterized by exposed fabric of seafloor spreading on the downgoing slab, a steep inner trench wall and linear ridges and valleys on the {P}uysegur ridge crest. {T}he data collected on this cruise provide insights into the nature and history of both plates, and factors influencing the distribution of strike-slip and compressive strain and the evolution of subduction processes along a highly oblique convergent margin.
