@article{fdi:010009464, title = {{C}ompressive tectonism along the {E}astern margin of {M}alaita {I}sland ({S}olomon {I}slands)}, author = {{A}uzende, {J}ean-{M}arie and {K}roenke, {L}. and {C}ollot, {J}ean-{Y}ves and {L}afoy, {Y}. and {P}elletier, {B}ernard}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{N}ew bathymetric and geophysical data were collected in the region east of the island of {M}alaita during the {SOPACMAPS} {II} cruise of the {F}rench research vessel {L}'{A}talante. {T}his region, part of the {M}alaita {A}nticlinorium was interpreted as a piece of oceanic crust from the {O}ntong {J}ava {P}lateau obducted over the old {S}olomon {I}slands arc during collision between the {P}acific and {A}ustralian plates. {I}t has been generally accepted that convergent motion between the {A}ustralia and {P}acific plates since the {L}ate {M}iocene was absorbed exclusively along the {S}an {C}ristobal trench, southwest of the {S}olomon {I}slands {A}rc. {B}athymetry, imagery, and geophysical data (magnetism, gravity, seismic) acquired during the {SOPACMAPS} {II} survey allow us to classify the successive parallel ridges mapped within the region as being recent volcanic, oceanic crust, or deformed sedimentary ridges. {S}eismic profiling provides evidence of successive compressive events along the {M}alaita margin caused by the relative motion between the {S}olomon {I}slands and the {P}acific plate. {T}he main phase of convergence probably occurred during {O}ligocene-early {M}iocene time, but some relative motion between the two domains are still being absorbed along the {E}ast {M}alaita boundary. {T}he existence of active faulting in the sedimentary cover throughout the region and the present-day deformation of the outer sedimentary ridge is a good illustration of this phenomenon.
