@inproceedings{fdi:010007684, title = {{G}rassland dynamics in intertropical {A}frica during the late holocene : phytolith analysis}, author = {{A}lexandre, {A}. and {M}eunier, {J}.{D}. and {L}{\'e}zine, {A}.{M}. and {V}incens, {A}. and {S}chwartz, {D}ominique}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}he reconstitution of {A}frican tropical grassland history during the late {H}olocene can be carried out using phytolith analysis. {F}ossil phytolith assemblages from the lake {G}uiers, in the sahelian region of {S}enegal, and from the lake {S}innda, in the guineo-congolian region of {C}ongo are investigated. {T}he phytolith data are compared to pollen data previously obtained on the same sites. {S}amples of soil surfaces from the sahelian, sudanian and guineo-congolian regions are analysed for reference. {T}he phytolith data emphasizes that the driest phase of the {L}ate {H}olocene, around the lake {S}innda, occurred between 4000 and 1200 yr {BP}, ensued by the opening of the rainforest and its replacement by a short grass savanna. {A}fter 1200 yr {BP}, wetter climatic conditions development are evidenced by the setting of modern shrub and tall grass savanna up to now. {I}n the sahelian zone around the lake {G}uiers, a dry phase occurred after about 2000 yr {BP} and has not been ensued by climatic improvement. {I}t is evidenced by the progressive replacement of a tall grass savanna woodland by a shrub and short grass savanna which occurs until today. {T}his study has been supported by the french programs {PEGI} and {ECOFIT}.
