Such aerobic and anaerobic stages are often the only way to mineralise toxic compounds. Theoretical arguments are presented in this paper which demonstrate that the two phases can take place within one reactor without compartmentalisation. Experimental results on the application of these concepts to a pentachlorophenol containing wastewaters are also presented.
